The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Tuesday they have released former starting running back Doug Martin.

Martin, a former first-round draft pick, played six seasons in Tampa but started all 16 games just twice due to injuries.

Martin, 29, has 4,633 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns in his career so far. He was popular early in his career for the nickname “Muscle Hamster” that described his 5-foot-9, 223-pound build and bruising style of running.

The Bucs do not have many reliable options at the position on their roster. Charles Sims and Jacquizz Rodgers have turned up in some moments as good complements to Martin, but only Rodgers is under contract in 2018. Peyton Barber, a back-up, is a pending “exclusive rights free agent.”
