The Washington Nationals have signed right-handed relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN first reported.
Benoit, who will turn 41 in July, has a 58-49 career record, 53 saves, a lifetime 3.83 ERA and 1,058 strikeouts over 1,068.2 innings pitched. He joins his ninth Major League team.
The Nationals signed Benoit to a major league contract, reportedly for one year and $1 million. Washington right-hander Koda Glover has dealt with shoulder soreness since reporting to spring training and has not yet thrown in Florida, so Benoit likely adds depth in that part of the bullpen as Glover heals.
Benoit started his career with the Texas Rangers for eight years, but most recently played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies in 2017.
The righty has only played three seasons in the National League. Before splitting 2017 between the two Pennsylvania clubs, Benoit played for the Padres in 2014 and 2015.
