Alex Smith suffers infection post-leg surgery: Report

Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered an infection following surgery on his broken leg and remains in the hospital, according to multiple reports. 

Last month, Smith suffered a season-ending fractured fibula and tibia against the Houston Texans. He then underwent surgery and the Redskins initially provided a timetable of 6-8 months for recovery. 

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there’s no indication yet on how Smith’s infection could affect his playing future. 

My curiosity about Alex Smith’s silence evoked a tip, which prompted some research, which yielded more info, which feels solid. I’m told Smith indeed still in hospital with post-op infection. Will likely require re-intervention, incl possibly “partial reconstruction.”

On Thanksgiving, Fox’s Jay Glazer reported Smith would miss 8-10 months and not be ready for the start of the season. But when asked about that report, coach Jay Gruden said he was still working off the team’s original timetable.

The Redskins released a statement Thursday asking people to honor Smith’s family’s request for privacy.
