MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Television stations in Vermont say a proposed rule change from the Federal Communications Commission could cut their funding and shut the stations down.
The new rule would cut federal funding for cable-access TV stations, and a final ruling on the proposal could come by next year. Vermont Public Radio reports Lake Champlain Access Television Executive Director Kevin Christopher says a sudden loss of funding would be devastating for stations in Vermont.
Christopher says cable-access stations are a public service, providing access to select board meetings and local community programing. He calls the proposal an attempt to “deregulate the obligations of cable operators and put more money in shareholder pockets.”
