BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Department of Corrections says a hostage situation between an inmate and an employee in a prison library was resolved without injury.
Corrections officials say inmate Timothy Monk took a male library employee hostage with a prison-made blade at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye.
Monk demanded to leave the prison.
Authorities say a tactical unit contained the situation to one room in the law library and then deployed a device meant to cause a diversion. They were able to take the inmate into custody without using lethal force.
No injuries were reported.
Monk is currently serving 97 years for sexual assault, armed robbery and other convictions. He is expected to face new charges for the hostage incident.
Buckeye is roughly 55 miles (89 kilometers) west of Phoenix.
