LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Design work is finished for an 11-mile, four-lane expressway south of Lincoln that’s designed to divert truck traffic away from a heavily traveled city highway.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the state will begin purchasing the necessary rights of way and relocate utilities next year to make way for the Lincoln South Beltway.

The expressway will link U.S. Highway 77 and Nebraska Highway 2. It’s expected to divert truck traffic away from Nebraska Highway 2 through the city. The Nebraska Department of Transportation will begin contacting affected property owners early next year.

State officials expect to begin construction in 2020, and it’s expected to take five to seven years.
