Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, who was released from a federal prison last week, said Friday he wants to run for Congress in 2020.
Papadopoulos who was sentenced to 14 days in jail for lying to federal investigators with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia meddling probe, said he initially joined the Trump campaign for experience before launching his own Congressional bid.
“Things just took a different direction,” he told the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph. “But my end game remains the same. I do want to run for Congress. I’m planning to run for Congress in 2020.”
Papadopoulos, who lives in Los Angeles, said that he is looking for a “Republican enclave” somewhere in California where he can run for Congress.
Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to lying to investigators. He still has to serve 12 months of supervised release and 200 hours of community service along with a $9,500 fine.
Earlier this week, Papadopoulos announced he will be the subject of a new documentary series about his relationship with his wife. The series has not found a distributor, but filming started last month.
