PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former Providence city councilman who was charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from a youth track program he founded has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Kevin Jackson was also ordered Wednesday to pay back the money and fined $1,000. Jackson will be allowed to serve his time in minimum security, and will be allowed to work during the day, but will have to return to prison at night.
The 60-year-old Jackson previously pleaded no contest to embezzlement and misusing campaign funds.
Prosecutors say the Democratic former councilman embezzled the money from the Providence Cobras, a track program he founded for underprivileged youths.
Jackson was first elected 1994 but was recalled when the charges came to light.
