PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia has opened a temporary shelter at the West Philadelphia High School for more than 65 residents displaced by an early morning five-alarm fire.
Nearly 200 firefighters spent more than six hours battling the blaze in the city’s Overbrook section Monday morning. Philly.com reports the fire was brought under control shortly before 8 a.m., but fire crews remained on scene to put out hotspots throughout the day.
The blaze was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Monday and firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the top floor of the four-story apartment building.
Firefighters were using snorkels and ladders to pour water on the fire from above.
City officials urged displaced residents to shelter at the high school where partner agencies will work to find long term housing options for people.
