NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs will receive more of the state’s “rainy day” funds to subsidize the operations of a new veterans nursing home.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that lawmakers last week approved Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s request to transfer up to $1.8 million to the department. The agency has struggled to fill the Arkansas State Veterans Home at North Little Rock with residents. The facility has operated at a deficit since opening in January 2017.

The agency previously received about $1.4 million from state reserve funds before last week’s allocation.

The North Little Rock home is one of two state-run veterans homes, but it’s the first built specifically for veterans and their eligible dependents.

Veterans Affairs Director Nate Todd says the department hopes to get the home to between 85 and 90 percent capacity.
