CHICAGO (AP) - Construction is underway on a recreation facility on Chicago’s West Side.
Officials broke ground Sunday on the Exelon Student Recreation Center. The facility will be 100,000 square feet (9,300 square meters) and include an indoor track, artificial turf field, basketball courts and community rooms.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the center will host athletic league programs and regional competitive events for children and young adults. Improvements are also planned for the rest of the 9-acre (36,400 square meters) Addams Park.
Funding is coming from the city, the Chicago Park District and Chicago Housing Authority and a donation from Exelon.
Williams Von Hoene Jr. is Exelon senior vice president and chief strategy officer. He says the center will be a safe after-school place for kids and “will teach important life lessons.”
