AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - First lady Ann LePage is opening the lawn of the governor’s official residence to military families for an ice cream social - for one last time.

Each child will receive free school supplies at Wednesday’s back-to-school event at Blaine House. Guests are encouraged to wear play clothes so they can play lawn games with LePage.

This is the eighth annual Military Families Ice Cream Social. LePage’s husband, Republican Gov. Paul LePage, cannot run for re-election in November because of term limits.

LePage says the event is a way of thanking military service members and their families for their “tremendous sacrifices.”
