BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin and Democratic primary challenger Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim have sparred in a contentious televised debate.
Galvin and Zakim jabbed at each other repeatedly Tuesday on WGBH.
Zakim said Galvin was slow to embrace same-day voter registration and faulted him for accepting donations from people with business before his office and for using taxpayer money to produce public service announcements which he said Galvin used to boost his profile.
Galvin, first elected to the office in 1994, defended his record, pointing in part to his oversight of the expansion of early voting in the 2016 election for the first time in Massachusetts.
Galvin also challenged Zakim to sign an agreement aimed at curbing political attack ads by outside groups.
The primary is Sept. 4.
