The Washington Redskins released cornerback Orlando Scandrick, five months after signing him in free agency, as first reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Scandrick was signed to be an option at nickel cornerback after the Redskins dealt Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade. He joined the team after 10 seasons with the division rival Dallas Cowboys.
Coach Jay Gruden touted the development of his other cornerbacks in explaining why the Redskins were parting ways with Scandrick.
“We drafted (Greg) Stroman and obviously we got Adonis (Alexander), and I think with the emergence of Danny Johnson, Fabian Moreau at nickel, we wanted to get these guys reps at nickel and (Quinton) Dunbar at corner and move on,” Gruden said.
The team made this decision now to allow Scandrick time to sign with another team before the regular season, Gruden said.
Scandrick received a $1 million signing bonus when he signed, but that’s all Washington has given up for his brief stay in town.
