KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - An 80-year-old man in southeastern Washington has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for raping a child.

The Tri-City Herald reports William Nicol was sentenced Thursday in Benton County Superior Court.

A jury found in 2016 that Nicol violated his position of trust to rape a boy over several years.

Nicol left the courthouse before the verdict was read. He was convicted of child molestation and two counts of child rape.

He was captured one year later while driving into California from Mexico.

The boy shared with a relative in 2015 that he had been sexually abused by Nicol and told investigators it started when he was young and escalated to rape.

Nicol denied the allegations, saying that the boy was put up to it.
