COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old South Carolina teen was fatally stabbed after breaking in to a home.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says the apartment’s resident told investigators two people he didn’t know started banging on his door about noon Friday. The unidentified resident says he refused to open his door, armed himself with a knife and called 911. After he got off the phone, the two kicked in the door, and he stabbed one of them in the chest.

The county coroner says the 16-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Lott says 19-year-old Melvin Strong is charged with burglary and malicious injury to property. He was being held Saturday in the Richland County jail. It was unknown if he had an attorney.
