GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina mayor says he would be fine adding an additional plaque at a Confederate monument to better explain the city’s history.
Greenville Mayor Knox White told The Greenville News on Tuesday that providing more information might be a compromise with those who want the monument removed.
White says an updated plaque to explain the full story of the community before, during and after the Civil War would be a good move.
South Carolina law prohibits the removal or change of any monument. White says an addition is allowed.
The existing plaque portrays a sympathetic portrait of the South’s fight against the Union.
Violent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, over removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee have prompted communities to consider removal of Confederate memorials.
