ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Using traps to catch stray animals is legal, but there are strict rules about their use, Anchorage Animal Care and Control officials said.
Animal Care and Control Public Relations Director Laura Atwood said a humane trap must be used.
The trap must be checked every 12 hours, Atwood said. Once an animal is caught, Atwood said it has to be cared for humanely, including making sure the animal has food, water and is out of the elements.
City law always requires people who trap stray animals to either turn them over to Animal Care and Control, or to the pet owner, if the trapper knows who they are, Atwood said.
The city’s leash law also applies to cats, which must be contained if they leave private property, KTUU-TV reported (https://bit.ly/2gM4Se3 ).
With winter approaching, Atwood said traps, used in accordance with city rules, can be helpful in getting stray pets off the streets and out of harsh weather conditions.
