OGDEN, Utah (AP) - The Utah Department of Transportation says it is considering doubling or tripling Interstate 15 Express Lanes toll rates.
The Standard-Examiner reports (https://bit.ly/2xRgsLK ) the proposed increase for single-occupant users is an effort to reduce congestion on the lanes. The idea was presented to the state transportation commissioners earlier this month.
The system charges solo drivers a fee based on current traffic conditions. The price is higher when I-15 is more congested.
The department is considering raising the maximum toll rate from $1 per segment to $2 per segment.
Commissioners say the department’s proposed increase may be too low to deter solo drivers from the express lanes. Instead they would like to raise it to $2.50 per segment or higher.
The commissioners could vote on the increase as early as Oct. 13.
