WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa woman serving a life sentence for a cutting the throats of her young sons, killing one, is asking for a new trial.

The Courier reports that 44-year-old Michelle Kehoe was in court Thursday for a hearing on her motion. She testified that she should get a new trial, because her diminished mental state kept her from taking the stand in her 2009 trial.

Kehoe was sentence to life for the 2008 death of her 2-year-old son Seth, and to 25 years for the attack on her then-7-year-old son. She turned the knife on herself after the attack on the boys. Kehoe initially told investigators she and her children were kidnapped and attacked by someone else.

A judge will issue a ruling on Kehoe’s motion at a later date.
