RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A Rutland man has pleaded not guilty to killing his live-in companion.

Fifty-eight-year-old Randal Johnson was being held without bail on Tuesday. He’s charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Trina Fitzgerald.

Officials with the Rutland City Police Department say Fitzgerald called first responders for medical assistance Aug. 27. She died by the time they arrived to her Rutland apartment.

Police say a medical examiner determined Fitzgerald’s cause of death was a homicide.

Johnson, her live-in companion, was arrested Monday.
