SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Ticket revenue at this year’s Illinois State Fair Grandstand fell just short of the record $2.08 million sold in 2016.
More than 59,000 Grandstand tickets were sold, up from more than 58,500 in 2016.
But the ticket revenue of Grandstand’s nine shows that charged admission was a little short of last year’s record with nearly $2.07 million in tickets, The State Journal-Register reported.
Two of every five tickets sold were for two shows, three-time Grammy-winning a cappella group Pentatonix and the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch.
Pentatonix was the biggest moneymaker for the fair, selling $439,000 in tickets.
State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon says officials, who were “a bit apprehensive” to schedule the acapella group, are pleasantly surprised with how well they sold.
Five Finger Death Punch sold the most tickets of all the concerts with more than 13,300 tickets. An average lower ticket price led to sales of nearly $330,000.
The concerts that generated the lease amount of money were 1990s groups Sublime with Rome and Blues Traveler as well as pop, hip-hop and rhythm and blues singer Jason Derulo. Each performance drew about 3,500 people and about $100,000 in ticket sales.
Rocker John Mellencamp’s performance cost the fair the most at $300,000. Mellencamp’s show sold $285,000 in tickets.
