The woman charged with tossing a cup of urine on a Metrobus driver pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday.

The judge also ordered the 38-year-old woman, Opal Brown, to undergo a mental evaluation, stay away from the victim and not ride the bus route.

Ms. Brown was videotaped Aug. 26 urinating into a purple cup and tossing the contents at the driver before departing the bus.

She had told NBC4’s Adam Tuss before turning herself into to police that she was “provoked” and had to use the bathroom “real, real bad.”

Ms. Brown wrote a letter of apology before appearing in court on Thursday.

As she and her pastor, Robert Clemetson, left the courthouse on Thursday, Ms. Brown shielded her face as Mr. Clemetson told reporters, “The first thing we want to do is apologize to the operator for what should have never happened to anyone serving in public service. I think, however, this is a tragic intersection between public health issues and public transportation issues.”
