SCITUATE, R.I. (AP) - A deputy sheriff has been placed on administrative leave after a man who was supposed to be released was instead left overnight in a holding cell.
State Police Superintendent Col. Ann Assumpico said the man was held at the McGrath Judicial Complex in Wakefield Thursday and wasn’t discovered until the building was opened Friday morning.
The individual was supposed to be let go following an appearance in Superior Court on Thursday afternoon after a judge ordered the man released on his own recognizance.
The man was allowed to leave after he was discovered in the holding cell at about 8 a.m. Friday.
Assumpico said an investigation is being carried out. She said the man may not have been able to walk out of the courtroom immediately Thursday because of paperwork.
