SAN DIEGO (AP) - Officials say three San Diego State University students treated for viral meningitis are out of the hospital and have no lasting health consequences.
The Union-Tribune said Monday that the three sorority members had viral meningitis, a less severe type of the disease. The newspaper says reports the women had more serious bacterial meningitis are false.
Meningitis spreads through respiratory droplets, coughing and sneezing and can stay on surfaces.
San Diego State is particularly sensitive to news of the disease after 18-year-old freshman Sara Stelzer died in 2014 after contracting bacterial meningitis.
