WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Colby College says it’s embarking on the largest fundraising campaign ever undertaken by a liberal arts college in the U.S.

Colby says the goal for “Dare Northward” campaign is $750 million.

Officials say the campaign began a year ago, and it was publicized for the first time Friday night. More than $380 million already has been raised.

Officials say more than 10,000 donors have contributed, and the college has received 32 contributions of $1 million or more. Major gifts so far include a gift of more than $100 million to establish the Lunder Institute for American Art, which was launched this fall.

Co-chair Bill Alfond said the campaign is about giving the college the best tools, and finding bridges between the college and the Waterville community.
