PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A community organizer says he is running for mayor of Providence, a seat currently held by fellow Democrat Jorge Elorza.
Kobi Dennis announced his mayoral campaign on Sunday in a Facebook Live video. In an interview with The Providence Journal, Dennis said he wanted to be as “different as possible” when announcing his campaign.
Dennis has never held public office before. He completed a tour with the Navy during Operation Desert Storm. The 46-year-old grassroots organizer has launched multiple community initiatives in Providence including Project Night Vision, Unified Solutions and Providence Midnight Basketball.
Dennis had previously helped campaign for Elorza. He says he has nothing against Elorza’s administration.
Elorza has not formally announced a reelection campaign.
