RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Late-summer hail storms caused September building permit figures to spike in Rapid City.

The most serious storm was Aug. 14, when the city was pounded with hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

The Rapid City Journal reports that nearly 400 permits were issued last month for roofing repair work. That bumped total permits to 631, the eighth-highest number of permits issued in a month since 2000.

The total permit valuation for September surpassed $12 million.
