Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday that the elimination of the state and local tax exemption will likely not be in the Senate tax plan.

“A lot of people are upset about that, but that’s going to go away,” Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican, said on Fox News. “But what really matters is how much do you pay at the end of the day?”

Mr. Rubio pushed back on the idea that the House and Senate were clashing over tax reform, saying that this is typically how legislation is done. He added that the changes between the chambers is normal especially on an issue as large and complex as tax reform.

“Tax reform is hard. That’s why it hasn’t been done in 25 years. But it’s not a clash. It’s the way this thing works,” he said.

Mr. Rubio said one item he’ll push for is an increase on the child tax credit. The senator said he’d like to see the child tax credit raised from $500 to $2,000 per child annually. But Mr. Rubio added that he would not withhold support from the bill, but rather would offer an amendment if the credit in the proposal isn’t high enough.

“This is the starting point,” he said.
