PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence officials say the effort to recall a city councilman charged with embezzlement could cost taxpayers more than $150,000 by the time a special election to replace him is held this summer.
Residents voted 1,772-158 to recall Kevin Jackson, a Democrat, in a special election last Tuesday. The recall vote is unofficial and must be certified by an elections board later this month.
WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2psMwOX ) that records show the city has already spent almost $90,000 on legal costs associated with the recall of Jackson and the election.
A spokesman for Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza says the city anticipates spending between $60,000 and $80,000 for the special primary and general elections to be held in Ward 3 in the summer.
Jackson was indicted in July. He has maintained his innocence.
