CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) - A former suburban New York police officer involved in a fatal drunken driving crash will spend a year in jail.

The Journal News (https://lohud.us/2qIGnOI ) says retired Carmel (kahr-MEHL’) officer Richard O’Keefe was sentenced Wednesday for criminally negligent homicide.

The November 2015 crash in Mahopac (MAY’-oh-pak) killed Somers (SOH’-murz) teaching assistant Fran Ghelarducci (gehl-ahr-DOO’-chee), who was known to her grade-school students as “Mrs. G.”

Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy says the community still mourns the loss of a “wonderful person” who had a widespread positive impact.
