ERIE, Pa. (AP) - Mercyhurst University has started construction on a new $25 million residence hall.

The Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/2sdHLuo ) reports that demolition on the school’s old Highland Square apartments began Tuesday. The new housing project replacing the complex will house an estimated 350 sophomores.

Mercyhurst’s 148,000 square-foot-building (about 13,750 square meters) will hold 90 suites. The school plans to build a dining hall, gym and security office in the complex as well.

Mercyhurst hasn’t completed a major housing project since 2009.

The new complex is scheduled to open for the 2018-2019 school year. Officials haven’t named the complex yet.
