MAINZ, Germany (AP) - Mainz has presented Sandro Schwarz as coach for next season.

Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroeder says Schwarz, the club’s former under-23 coach, will get a contract through June 2020.

Schroeder says “we’re happy to get Sandro on board. He embodies Mainz, that’s what we need. We need this change.”

The 38-year-old Schwarz replaces Martin Schmidt, from whom he took over as under-23 coach when the Swiss took over the senior side in February 2015. Schmidt impressed in his first season but only goal difference separated the team from Wolfsburg in the relegation playoff spot this year.

The club parted ways with Schmidt on May 22, two days after the final game of the season.

Schwarz says “to be sitting here now is a huge honor for me, a huge chance.”
