COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont lawmakers are working to find a compromise with Republican Gov. Phil Scott over the state budget, which he has vowed to veto because of a disagreement over teacher health care plans.
But Democratic House Speaker Mitzi Johnson tells Vermont Public Radio (https://bit.ly/2qg4LYi) the House is not ready to cut core principals to reach a deal.
Scott has promised to veto both the budget and the property tax bill.
A veto session is scheduled for June 21. The budget needs to be passed by July 1.
Senate President Time Ashe, a Democrat and Progressive, says Senate members will review compromise measures this week.
Scott says if he does not reach an agreement with lawmakers over teacher health care, he will sign the budget as is to avoid a government shutdown.
