WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A candidate for office in Massachusetts has been told that he’s not allowed to run for two different seats on the city council.
The Telegram & Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2qiOl0s ) that William S. Coleman III has filed to run for Worcester council representing the city’s first district and, separately, representing the city at large.
But the Election Commission told him Tuesday he can’t do that. They rejected his comparisons to a previous candidate who ran for two offices, saying she sought positions on two different elected bodies, not two seats on the same body.
Coleman argued the decision may be unnecessary because he’d likely only face a preliminary election in the District 1 race, and if he were to lose, he’d only run for the at-large seat in the general election.
