SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Springfield man charged with fatally stabbing a woman in the city has been held without bail.

Jose Gonzalez pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday.

Police say 42-year-old Luz Vazquez was spotted by a pizza delivery driver lying in the street just after midnight Sunday suffering from multiple stab wounds as well as skull and jaw fractures. She died at the hospital.

Nearly four hours later, the 32-year-old Gonzalez was arrested after going to the hospital with a cut on his hand. His friends said he had been robbed and stabbed, but police arrested him after finding blood in his car.

Police say the suspect and victim lived in the same boarding house but did not disclose a possible motive.

Gonzalez’s lawyer did not argue for bail.
