LYNBROOK, N.Y. (AP) - A school board member on Long Island has been arrested on a marijuana possession charge following a board meeting.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2psYg7X ) reports that Melissa Figueroa claims she was “set up.”

Figueroa is a member of the Hempstead school board. Two hours after a board meeting Thursday night, she was stopped by police in nearby Lynbrook after an officer noticed she was not wearing a seat belt.

Police said an officer smelled marijuana in the car and found a used marijuana cigarette.

She was given a summons on a charge of unlawful possession of marijuana. She is due in court on June 15.

Figueroa is running for re-election against two other school board candidates next Tuesday. She was first elected in 2016.
