A woman has been charged with felony reckless endangerment after she allegedly chased Rep. David Kustoff in her car following a town hall meeting at the University of Tennessee’s Martin campus.
Wendi Wright, 35, was arrested and booked Monday after she chased a vehicle occupied by Mr. Kustoff and aide Marianne Dunavant, putting them in “fear of being forced off of the roadway,” the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday.
The woman followed the vehicle into the driveway of a person Mr. Kustoff knew and exited her own vehicle to confront the congressman, the release said.
“Wright exited her vehicle and began screaming and striking the windows of their vehicle and at one point reached inside their vehicle,” police said. “She then stood in front of their vehicle in an attempt to keep them blocked in.”
A 911 call was reportedly made during the altercation, but Ms. Wright fled the scene before deputies arrived. She was later identified by police after posting details of the encounter on Facebook, the release stated.
The release said Mr. Kustoff and Ms. Dunavant had been at a town hall meeting at the University of Tennessee prior to the incident.
Sgt. Marty Plunk of the Sheriff’s Department told BuzzFeed News that Ms. Wright tried to approach Mr. Kustoff after the meeting, but the congressman left in his car and “that’s why she began following him.”
“I’ve been led to believe she was upset over a vote he had cast involving health care,” Sgt. Plunk said.
Mr. Kustoff voted in favor of the American Health Care Act on May 4.
Ms. Wright has been released from custody after posting a $1,000 bond and will be arraigned Monday in Weakley County General Sessions Court.
