NEW YORK (AP) - More than two dozen turtles have been rescued after a group of women attempted to remove them from a lake in a New York City park.
A passer-by stopped the group from removing the turtles from Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn and called the police. The women removed and bagged a total of 27 turtles before they were stopped.
WCBS-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/2r7ytOW ) police had detained one woman, who was issued a summons for the incident on May 4.
The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation says it is illegal to remove or harm animals in city parks. Violators can face fines of up to $4,000.
A member of a Brooklyn animal rights group says the removal of animals from city parks is considered poaching.
