SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The University of Utah says it will hire an independent auditor to review the financial ties between the University of Utah and the Huntsman Cancer Institute after a dispute between leaders at the institutions led to resignations of the university’s president and a top health care official.

A lawyer for the university said on Wednesday that the auditor will be tasked with reviewing what funds the institute receives and how it uses that money.

Lawyer Alan Sullivan says university officials want an independent review conducted so that they have enough information to negotiate an agreement between the two institutions.

The announcement follows public outcry from the cancer institute’s benefactor Jon Huntsman Sr. over the firing of director and CEO Mary Beckerle on April 17. She was reinstated a week later, and the school’s health care leader and president stepped down.
