BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is backing off comments he made suggesting a New York grand jury was investigating President Trump’s campaign ties to Russia.

During an interview Wednesday on CNN, the Massachusetts Democrat said there are “strong allegations the Russians had relationships with people inside of the Trump campaign” and that “a grand jury has been impaneled up in New York.”

Markey spokeswoman Giselle Barry told the Boston Herald that Markey made the New York comments “erroneously.” She said “the information he was provided during a briefing is not substantiated.”

She said Markey apologized for the confusion.

Markey has warned the country is “careening ever closer to a Constitutional crisis” and has joined other Democrats in calling for a special prosecutor to investigate Russian interference in last year’s presidential election.
