NAMPA, Idaho (AP) - The owner of Owyhee County feedlot says he will stop storing whey byproduct in a dirt pit after an Idaho conservation group raised concerns about possible regulation violations.
The Idaho Statesman (https://bit.ly/2qwkVAv ) reports that state inspectors found no wrongdoing while investigating the complaint filed by the Idaho Conservation League earlier this year.
The group alleged that Sorrento Lactalis may be violating the state’s waste-disposal and groundwater-protection regulations.
Despite being cleared by the state, feedlot owner John Hepton told inspectors he has stopped accepting the whey byproduct and will use the pit for other purposes.
The pit, nearly as big as two football fields, had been used to feed cattle.
Idaho Conservation League Program Director Justin Hayes says phasing out the pit is the right move.
