Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio dismissed the idea that the Trump administration’s ouster of FBI Director James B. Comey was motivated by actions that Mr. Comey took during the 2016 presidential campaign, which Democrats have blamed in part for Hillary Clinton’s loss.
Mr. Brown said many of his GOP colleagues are just as upset about Mr. Comey’s ouster as his fellow Democrats.
“If this were about the Clinton campaign, he should have fired him on January 20,” Mr. Brown told reporters Wednesday, alluding to the day of Mr. Trump’s inauguration. “It is only about his investigation, and he knows they are getting close, and he is going to resist it as a result.”
Democrats and even some Republicans say they have been troubled by the firing. Others members of the GOP have given muted approval.
