Sen. Sherrod Brown sent a letter to President Trump Monday with a recommended plan for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Mr. Brown of Ohio told CNN his plan calls on Mr. Trump to ensure American jobs aren’t shipped overseas and that the “Buy American” provisions are upheld. He has been a vocal advocate of renegotiating NAFTA and putting in fair trade practices to protect American jobs, something he and the president agree on.
The Democrat did say that despite working closely with Mr. Trump on the issue, he also sent the letter to make sure the president follows the law.
“The purpose of the letter was to make sure the president stands firm on American laws, not his opinion of what American laws say,” Mr. Brown said.
Mr. Brown is up for re-election in 2018 in a state Mr. Trump won by 9 points last year.
