LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Officials on Long Island say a fire that left five firefighters injured was arson.

Nassau County authorities tell Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2mEAOSv) that crews responded to the Long Beach home around 6 a.m. Wednesday. Officials say investigators first suspected squatters caused the blaze when they were trying to keep warm with a fire.

Detectives then determined that the fire started on the first floor of the house and was set deliberately.

The fire damaged much of the home.

Nassau Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro says two of the injured firefighters were taken to Long Beach Hospital.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
