BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A mother accused of contributing to her 6-year-old son’s death has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette (https://bit.ly/2niVjBw ) reports 45-year-old Cathy Lynn Torres pleaded guilty Wednesday to capital murder. She was given an additional 20-year sentence for first-degree battery.

Prosecutors agreed to waive the death penalty under a plea bargain.

In 2015, a medical examiner determined the boy’s death was caused by chronic abuse and a bacterial infection that resulted after being sodomized with a stick.

The victim’s father was sentenced to death in November after being found guilty of capital murder and first-degree battery.

Benton County prosecutor Nathan Smith says the boy suffered chronic abuse at the hands of his father. Smith says Torres admitted to allowing the abuse and also hitting the boy.
