BURTON, S.C. (AP) - A mobile home fire that killed a Burton woman is being called “suspicious” by investigators.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says in a statement that 53-year-old Doreen Joy Varga was killed in the fire Monday.
The Burton Fire District and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Fire Department crews responded to the fire at 10:30 p.m.
Vargas was pronounced dead after she was removed from the fire and taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The Sheriff’s Office says the fire is being treated as suspicious, as is the cause and manner of Varga’s death. Sheriff’s Office personnel are conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, while the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Arson Team is investigating the cause of the fire.
