MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed that two rare March tornadoes are the earliest to ever strike Minnesota.

Forecasters say it was a tornado that damaged buildings and took down trees and power lines near Zimmerman Monday evening. The community is about 35 miles north of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Preliminary survey results indicate it was an EF-1 tornado with peak winds estimated at 107 mph that traveled nearly 9 miles.

The Star Tribune (https://strib.mn/2n1QVaT ) says another survey team confirmed by Twitter that a second tornado caused damage in Clarks Grove about 15 miles north of Albert Lea in southern Minnesota on Monday evening. No injuries were reported at either location.

Previously, the earliest tornado ever reported in Minnesota happened on March 18, 1968, in Truman.
