DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The Durham Police Department has announced it has suspended its traffic checkpoints, citing concerns over its role in federal immigration enforcement.
In a statement released on Monday, the department said it has used checkpoints to ensure motorists are complying with traffic laws. But it said in recent weeks, there has been national and local concern regarding the role of local law enforcement officers in federal immigration enforcement. The statement said Durham police have not used checkpoints to enforce immigration laws,
The department said it would continue to participate in multi-jurisdictional highway safety campaigns, such as Booze It & Lose It and Click It or Ticket.
