DETROIT (AP) - A university in Detroit is readying itself for an accreditation process that would assure the quality of the school.

Wayne State University will be evaluated by the Higher Learning Commission this week, and is one of five Michigan universities receiving the evaluation this month. Two Michigan colleges will also receive the evaluation, the Detroit News (https://detne.ws/2mt2R7z ) reported.

The Higher Learning Commission is an accrediting body made up of academics. This will be the first time the team is evaluating Wayne State since its review of its accreditation criteria in 2009.

Wayne State has been preparing for the evaluation, performed every 10 years, since 2013.

Sandra Yee, co-chair of the university’s Higher Learning Commission work group, said the school’s preparation includes providing the commission with several reports, including improvements made on campus with academic advising.

When arriving at the campus, the commission will conduct three open forums for faculty and students on criteria in the university’s assurance argument. The assurance argument is a 35,000-word document outlining why the university’s accreditation should be reaffirmed.

“We believe we are well-prepared for the accreditation visit,” Yee said. “We have provided not only an argument that proves our quality, but we also have given a substantial body of evidence that gives the assurance argument its basis.”

After the visit, the team will give a report to the Institutional Actions Council to review so that a recommendation can be made to the Board of Governors. Student opinion surveys also influence the reaffirmation.

“It’s hard to miss, there are signs everywhere,” university sophomore Niharika Dantuluri said. “I think we’ll perform well. We’re a top school. I love this place.”
